2016

Thrown in the deep end

I didn't choose marketing. Marketing chose me — usually with zero warning. Armed with a marketing degree and immediately thrown into the deep end, I went from theory to real-world fast. Banking. Energy. Retail. Media. New builds. Every industry has its own rules, its own customers and its own way of keeping you on your toes.

There was never a slow ramp-up. It was always: here's the problem, now fix it. So I fixed it.

Figuring out what actually works

More than once, someone handed me a problem and said "you'll figure it out." So I did. Real budgets. Real pressure. Real results required. I got deep into what actually moves the needle — ads, social, websites, content — across industries that couldn't be more different.

On the side, I was helping friends, family and my husband's businesses. Because apparently I can't switch off.

After years of doing this in-house, on the side and everywhere in between, it started to feel obvious. I'd been doing the work anyway. I knew what worked. I knew what small businesses actually needed — because I'd been one, married one and worked inside plenty of them.

So I stopped doing it for everyone else and started doing it properly, for myself.
